Master of Science Degree
Speech-Language Pathology

Purpose

The MS Degree in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, delivered via distance learning strategies, is designed for the individual who holds an undergraduate degree in Speech Language Pathology (or has the undergraduate prerequisite courses),resides in the continental United States and, because of the distance (more than 50 miles), is unable to enroll in our on-campus program. Individuals desiring to take courses for purposes of Continuing Education or transfer to another university's degree program may be enrolled based upon space availability. (See Frequently Asked Questions)

Program Description

The MS degree is a 3 year, 54 credit hour program of study. The academic coursework is delivered on-line; the clinical component is accomplished by completing direct patient contact hours in a variety of clinical settings. Graduation requirements include completion of at least 54 graduate credit hours and 375 clinical hours as well as achieving a passing score on the PRAXIS II examination in speech-language pathology.

Program Delivery

The basic format we use for course delivery is asynchronous utilizing an electronic learning model which consists of actual course lectures. Students will download lectures from our department server to view the class on their own computer. Course documents (syllabi, hand-outs, exams) are made available through the use of e-mail or Blackboard. Some courses provide for synchronous learning via chat-rooms. Some classes require proctored exams, for which it is the student's responsibility to secure a proctor.

Equipment Requirements

Our classes are recorded into a streamed file and placed on the departmental server where the files can be viewed. These class files are approximaltely 150MBs so high speed intenet is necessary. If you are not sure if you have high speed internet, contact your service provider.

Required Computer Skills

Students must have skills in word processing (MS Word), in using the internet, downloading files and in being able to send attachments via e-mail. Students need to be familiar with Blackboard before starting classes. The ECU Blackboard Resource Link is: http://ecu.blackboard.com
