Course Descriptions

Undergraduate Prerequisites

3010. Phonetics (3) Prerequisite: CSDI major or minor,CSDI 2100; PSYC 1000; or consent of instructor. Applied phonetics using International Phonetic Alphabet and pertinent modifications. Detailed descriptions of American English speech sounds and transcription of contextual speech representing mainstream and nonmainstream dialects. Transcription abilities developed to assess and treat speech disorders.

3020. Language Development (3) Prerequisite: CSDI major or minor, CSDI 2100; PSYC 1000; or consent of instructor. Normal acquisition and development of language from birth through preschool years, components of language, cognitive and communicative prerequisites and language learning theories.

3030. Speech Science: Anatomy, Physiology and Acoustics (3) 3 lecture and 1 lab per week. Prerequisite: BIOL 1050, 1051; CSDI 2100; or consent of instructor. Anatomy, physiology and acoustic correlates of speech production mechanisms. Central and peripheral nervous sysstems, respiration, phonaion, resonation and articulation.

3050. Acquisition and Development of Phonology and Articulation (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 3010, 3030 or consent of instrutor. Emphasis on birth to five years and critical periods through the early teen years. Content areas include birth cry, babbling, cross linguistic and universal patterns of acquisition, morphophonology, metaphonology, historical and contemporary normative data issues and interrelation of normal phonological development with other areas of language growth.

3150. Hearing Science (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 3030; PHYS 1050; or consent of instructor. Basic information, including acoustics, anatomy and physiology of the ear and central auditory nervous system, and psychoacoustics.

4100. Introduction to Audiology (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 3105 or consent of instructor. Concepts related to normal hearing, causes and effects of defective hearing and hearing testing procedures.

4110. Aural Rehabilitation (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 4100 or consent of instructor. Habilitation, rehabilitation of the hearing impaired as related to hearing aid use, speech-reading, auditory training and total communication. Management philosophies related to children and adults.

Graduate

6100. Language Disorders (3) Prerequisite: An undergraduate course in language development. Childhood language disorders from infancy to school-age period. Principles of assessment, intervention, and classification of various types of language disorders. Specific language impairment, developmental and acquired language disorders, and autism.

6101. Language and Learning Disabilities (3)  Prerequisite: CSDI 6100. Oral and written language learning disabilities in school-age and adolescent populations. Contemporary theories, assessment practices, and intervention techniques used in management of those with language learning disorders and/or dyslexia.

6103. Research Design In Speech and Hearing (3) Prerequisite: Undergraduate statistics course. Fundamentals of research and experimental design and basic statistical analysis in communication sciences and disorders.

6104. Seminar in Voice Disorders (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 6121 or consent of instructor. Anatomy and physiology of vocal mechanism and phonatory process. Consideration of influence of pathology on phonation. In-depth study of special voice problems as well as those more commonly encountered in clinical practice and their treatment.

6106. Stuttering and Other Fluency Disorders (3) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Current and historical concepts of nature and etiology of stuttering and other fluency disorders such as methodologies of assessments and treatment of children and adults, parent counseling, and research design.

6108. Seminar In Articulation/Phonology Disorders (3) Prerequisite: Undergraduate course in articulation/phonology or consent of instructor. Phonologic/articulatory development and disorders, the dynamics of articulatory production, phonetics as clinical tool, nature and development of normal and defective articulation/phonology. Contemporary scientific methodology technology, and research in appraisal and treatment of phonological/articulatory disorders.

6109. Motor Speech Disorders (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 3020, 3030, 6110; or consent of instructor. Neurophysiology of motor speech behavior coupled with detailed clinical analyses and treatment of various forms of dysarthria and apraxia.

6110. Brain, Language, and Aphasia (3) Prerequisites: CSDI 6100; or consent of instructor. Comprehensive study of the correlative nature of brain and language. Emphasis on aphasiology, including neurological, cognitive, and linguistic aspects.

6112. Seminar in Cranio-Facial Anomalies and Alaryngeal Rehabilitation (3) Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Anatomy, physiology, assessment and treatment of persons with cranio-facial anomalies (including cleft lip and palate) and alaryngeal disorders (laryngectomy).

6113. Linguistic/Cognitive Impairment in Brain-Injured Adults (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 6110 or consent of instructor.  Relationships between cognition, communicative abilities, and brain in normal aging dementia, various causes of dementia, head injury, and right hemisphere brain damage in adults.

6114. Dysphagia and Neuromotor Functions (3) prerequisite: CSDI 6109. Relationships between the brain and neuromotor functions specifically in regard to swallowing functions. Identification, characteristics, assessment, and treatment of disordered swallowing.

6121. Speech Science (3) Prerequisite: CSDI 3030 or equivalent. Acoustic theory of speech production and anatomical and physiological aspects of speech-motor production.

6200. Multicultural Communication Disorders (3) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Speech and language variations in regional dialects, bilingualism, foreign accent, and multicultural populations. Emphasis on assessing disorders and providing therapy to multicultural and multilingual populations.

6225, 6226, 6227. Clinical Practicum in Speech and Language Pathologies (1,2,3) Each course may be repeated from 1-3 semesters. Prerequisites: Completion of 24 s.h. of graduate academic course work in CSDI and consent of instructor. Utilization of advanced theoretical  knowledge with practical application for speech-language and hearing impaired individuals under direct faculty supervision in University Speech and Hearing Clinic.

6229. Distance Education Clinical Internship (3) May be repeated for 3 semesters. Prerequisite: Completion of 24 s.h. of academic CSDI graduate course work and consent of the director of CSDI DE program. Advanced supervised clinical practice in diagnostic and therpy procedures at university affiliated clinical facilities.

6900. Administration and Supervision in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (3) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Methods involved in organization, management, and supervision in public school or clinical speech-language and hearing therapy program.

6993. Full-time Intership in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology (2-9) Credit hours designated relative to clinical responsibilites of student at their specific clinical site of practice. Prerequisite: Completion of minimum of 3 senesters of full-time graduate study at East Carolina University and 150 patient contact hours; consent of director of clinical operations and department chair. Directed full-time clinical experience in university affiliated clinical facility for full semester.
